Grade 10 subject choices are very important because they can open or close certain career pathways. This guide helps Grade 8 and Grade 9 learners understand the compulsory CAPS subjects and the most common subject streams offered in South African schools.

No matter what stream you choose, every learner must take these four foundational subjects.

2. Typical CAPS Subject Streams: The 3 Electives

Schools normally bundle the remaining three elective subjects into career-focused streams. These are the common streams learners can consider when moving into Grade 10.

Pure Sciences / Medical Stream

This stream focuses on theory, abstract logic and laboratory sciences. It is highly competitive and strongly recommended for medical, science and engineering fields.
