Culture Based Safety® (CBS®)
in combination with
Experience Based Safety® (EBS®)
The key to a new world of safety behaviour
Developed
BACKGROUND
Management has 78% power to influence safety performance and to create a positive safety culture.
Management plays a major role in stimulating a safety culture. The focus on safety management has moved from engineering and management systems to
people. It is on empowerment, interdependent teams, a behavioural approach and continuous safety culture alignment.
Our Culture Based Safety® (CBS) and Experience Based Safety® (EBS) is the link between management’s safety vision and the human factor of
safe behaviour.
The CBS and EBS training is supported by a Safety Culture Sustainment (SCS) process with you.
WE HAVE LEARNED THAT THE MOST CRITICAL ROLES IN THE ACHIEVEMENT OF A ZERO SAFETY CULTURE IS THAT OF THE SUPERVISOR
CLOSEST TO THE WORKFORCE.
Supervisors are vital to the safety behaviour of their crews. When management gives their full support to a safety culture vision and when supervisors are
committed in doing their job right and safely, they will be respected as leaders who care and support and act as safety mentors who are passionate about safety.
We have combined the theory of Behaviour Based Safety with the philosophy and methodologies of experiential learning to create a new approach to safety
behaviour. The SAFETY CULTURE MODEL serves as guide to create a safety culture across all levels of management.
WE HAVE ALSO LEARNED THAT THE NEXT MOST CRITICAL ROLE IN THE ACHIEVEMENT OF A ZERO INCIDENTS SAFETY CULTURE IS THAT OF
AN INTERDEPENDENT TEAM CULTURE.
An interdependent team culture creates a safety environment that is most conducive for safety behaviour of each team member.
The SAFETY culture is cascaded to the labour force with an Experience Based Safety process. The foundation of EBS process lies in the EBS MODEL we have
developed and adapted from the theory on behaviour based safety and experiential learning.
THE EBTA APPROACH
We have combined the three critical roles of a successful safety culture development into a combination of interventions –
Culture Based Safety® for management and
Experience Based Safety® for the labour force
Safety Culture Sustainment
The CBS and EBS and SCS process follows a few logical steps to get everybody, from top-management to the labour force, to think and work safely:
1.
Introduction
1.1.
We learn more about your industry with a site visit guided by your expert personnel.
1.2.
We customise the CBS and EBS programs “With you for you”
1.3.
You dedicate an EBS Champion to the process
1.4.
Potential dedicated EBS coaches are selected in close collaboration with the EBS Champion
1.5.
We coordinate with you to identify a suitable training venue
1.6.
We build development training equipment that are suitable to fit the safety training outcomes
2.
Culture Based Safety Process
2.1.
Top-management revisits their safety vision. EBTA guides top-management to confirm their safety vision or to develop a new vision.
2.2.
During a Senior-management session they commit to the Top-management safety vision. This intervention is a combination of behaviour based safety
theory and experiential learning activities with safety culture outcomes.
2.3.
Then follows a session with each section’s managers to convey the Senior-management commitment to all other management levels. This session is also
a combination of theory and experiential learning activities with outcomes of safety culture development.
3.
Experience Based Safety Process
3.1.
Potential EBS coaches are taken through a selection process to nominate those with the  best potential to become dedicated EBS coaches (Two-day
          program)
3.2.
Selected EBS coaches do a Train the Trainer session (Four-day program)
3.3.
EBS training of your work force is done by the EBS coaches under full-time monitoring and support by EBS experts
3.4.
Each labour team engage on a safety behaviour change session. It is a two-day experiential learning based development sessions with outcomes of
safety behaviour through an interdependent team safety drive. It has the bonus outcomes of team development and that of increased production
          performance.
We develop the whole process “With you for you”. The major outcome is safety behaviour, but you benefit from the added outcomes of interdependent teamwork
and increased production performance.
This process does not replace any of your existing safety management programs. It rather enhances any of your safety management efforts.
START THINKING AND ACTING DIFFERENTLY ABOUT SAFETY AND YOU WILL EXPERIENCE HOW SIGNIFICANTLY YOU CAN IMPROVE
PRODUCTIVITY AND SAFETY PERFORMANCE.
Running the EBS process at NORTHAM PLATINUM LIMITED has resulted in a 59% decrease in incidents during the first year.
